Situated in the first class city in the Province of Ilocos Norte, Laoag City has never failed to bring us travel back the time. Although it is less popular for international tourists, the city which is dominated by strong Christian believers indulged me to blend with locals.
Located in the outskirt of the city, an old architecture church with Gothic and Baroque styling teleports me to the century back then. Paoay Church or known as Saint Agustine Church bewitched me by the strong brick attached on every single inch of its body. The bell tower stands magnificently reflecting the coral stone, another material that made it up.
Another unique attraction still on the same way to Paoay is Lapaz sand dunes. The large area of sand stretch for about 52 square miles where we better take a jeep to explore them all. The panoramic view of sand formation verge with the South Chinese Sea offers activity such as wake boarding. For me, it was enough to enjoy on the sea side and enjoying the wind.
Getting to Laoag
You can take direct flight from Manila to Laoag. If you keen to take a 12 hours bus ride from Manila, there are plenty of bus provider taking you to Laoag, one of them is Partas Bus (PHP 836). Laoag City ss just about two hours from Vigan City (PHP 137)
Where to Stay in Laoag
Not many options to stay in Laoag but try Java Hotel or Tiffany Hotel.
Transportation Around
Tricycles around city is only PHP 11. Since Paoay Church and the sand dunes are about 20 kms from the town, you can rent a tricycle to take you there. It shouldn't cost more than PHP 500 for return trip.
